TikTok is a media app for creating and sharing short videos owned by ByteDance. The app was launched as Douyin in China in September 2016 and introduced to the overseas market as TikTok after one year. The company employs more than 250 people in India and had plans for more investment.

Google and Apple have blocked access to the most popular TikTok app in India to go along with a state court’s directive to forbid its downloads.

A Court in southern Tamil Nadu state refused a request by China’s Bytedance Technology to suspend a ban on its TikTok app and ordered to ban the app. Bytedance challenged the state court’s ban order in India’s Supreme Court, saying it went against freedom of speech rights in India. The app is no longer available on Google’s Play store in India.

However, the company welcomed the decision and appointed a senior lawyer to assist the court in upcoming proceedings. Its next hearing is scheduled for April 24.

On April 3rd state government asked the federal government to ban the Tik Tok app by saying that it encouraged pornography and reroute the children to the sexual predators. The decision came out after an individual filed a public interest litigation calling to ban the Tik Tok app.

TikTok allows users to create and share short videos with some effects, it has become popular in India but has been criticised by some people who say its content is inappropriate and not good for society.
