Starting with the full form, NIFT stands for National Institute of Fashion Technology. Government of India established NIFT to help the students explore their talent. Moreover the course is appreciated all over the world. NIFT offers many courses for all the students to add proficiency to their talent. Also it has been ranked as 19th best fashion school in the world.


NIFT offers various courses for undergraduate and graduate students. There are separate courses for undergraduate and post graduate courses. Give below are the courses that are offered by NIFT-

1. B.DES

It stands for Bachelor of Design degree. It is 4-year based undergraduate degree that is offered by NIFT. This course focuses on imparting varied skills in fashion industry. Moreover it appreciates the diversity of interests in fashion industry that is why this course is sub-divided into 6 streams. These are as follows-
1. Fashion Communication
2. Leather Design
3. Accessory Design
4. Knitwear Design
5. Textile Design
6. Fashion Design

So, it depends on the interest of the student which option he/she chooses. Furthermore this course has created new standards in the Indian fashion industry. Now the designs are not confined to local shops or market. Indeed, Indian designs have appeared in the competitive international market. All the strategies, tools, and essential key points to grow your talent is all trained in this course.

Eligibility for the course-

• All the students who have passed class 12th from a recognized school board in India.
• Students who have passed any examination which is equivalent to +2 examination.

2. B.TECH in Apparel production

This is another course offered by NIFT for undergraduate students. Just like other undergraduate courses offered by NIFT it has a duration of 4 years. Furthermore its eligibility is similar to the eligibility of above undergraduate courses.

3. M.DES

This course stands for Master of Design and its duration is for 2 years. Just after doing the B.DES course, this course is structured to provide deep knowledge and skills to students to master their artistic and aesthetic skills. Also, this test requires a written as well as interview for admission.


• Students must have owned an undergraduate degree.
• Or the students must have any undergraduate diploma done from NIFT or NID.
• Lastly students could have diploma in Design from NIFT or NID.

4. M.F.M.

M.F.M stands for Master of Fashion management. This course is exclusively for the students who need to learn management and leadership skills to stand out in fashion industry. This course provide opportunities to get admission in retail, exports, e-commerce, merchandising and marketing in fashion industry. Another important point is that this course is also scheduled for 2 year.


Same as the above criteria for M.DES.


After B.FTECH, NIFT offers an opportunity to master the skills learnt in B.FTECH. Also, it enables the students to get a more defined and detailed study of his/her areas of interest and carve out their best skills. This course has a duration of 2 years. Furthermore its eligibility is similar to other master courses offered by NIFT.


• Students applying for B.DES need to go for 3 tests. These are-

1. CAT
2. GAT
3. Situation test
These tests have a weightage of 50%, 30% and 20% respectively.

• Students applying for B.FTECH need to go for one test of GAT.
• Students applying for M.DES need to go for 3 tests. These are-

• Students applying for M. FTECH need to qualify 2 tests-

1. GD/PI
2. GAT
These have a weightage of 30% and 70% respectively.

These have a weightage of 30% and 70% respectively.


For undergraduate NIFT courses, there is provision of appearing for CAT test. This test comprises of following components-
1. Intuition skills,
2. Observation skills,
3. Design ability and
4. Lastly, innovation in concept creation.


For postgraduate NIFT courses, there is provision of appearing for GAT test. This test comprises of following components-
1. General Knowledge and current affairs
2. English
3. Numerical Ability
4. Communication ability
5. Analytical ability

NIFT Situation Test

Candidates who have been shortlisted for NIFT BDes admissions on the basis of their written test need to appear for NIFT Situation Test 2018 wherein their “material handling and innovative ability” will be tested.

Here, candidates will be evaluated on “on Space Visualization, Innovative and creative use of given material, composition of elements, colour scheme, construction skill , finesse of the model and overall presentation etc. These parameters will be checked with the write up explaining the concept / idea behind the model constructed. The weightage of the write up is 30%. Since the medium of teaching in NIFT is English, the write-up will be in English language. No marks will be given for write-up in any other language”, specifies the official website.

NIFT Group Discussion

Candidates who have been shortlisted for Masters Programmes on the basis of their written entrance examination need to undergo Case Study based Group Discussions (GD) and NIFT Personal Interview round. In the NIFT admissions 2018 Group Discussion round candidates will be further shortlisted on the below mentioned basis:

  • Interpersonal skills
  • Ability to generate new ideas
  • Problem solving approach
  • Leadership qualities
  • Effective communication

NIFT Personal Interview

After the GD round, a panel will further shortlist candidates on the basis of a personal interview round. The parameters on the basis of which candidates will be judged here are:

  • Aptness for the field
  • Overall personal achievements in academics and co-curricular activities
  • Communication
  • General awareness and aptitude, creative and lateral thinking are likely to be useful
