The ace tennis player, Roger Federer, defeated India’s Sumit Nagal in the first round of the US Open in New York’s Arthur Ashe Stadium to advance to the second round. The 22-year-old Nagpal incredibly won the first set 6-4 but 20 times Grand Slam winner, Federer upped his game thereafter won the match by 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4..
Nagal is the only fourth Indian to win a set in the main draw of a Grand Slam in the last 20 years. However a win against Federer, a colossal figure with 20 Grand Slams to his credit, made it special.
Three other Indian player including Somdev Devvarman, Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni have managed to win a set in a Grand Slam main draw before Nagal, in the last two decades.
Nagal returns from the U.S. Open richer by $58,000 and with an experience of what it takes to compete at the biggest stage and against one of the greatest player.
Federer said, “It was a tough first set for me. He played pretty strong so credit to him. I was missing a lot of balls so I was trying to cut down the unforced errors. Hopefully it will get better.”
It was a shaky start for Federer in the match but for Nagal it was the best he would have felt on a tennis court.
Nagal stunned the crowd by breaking Federer’s serve in the third game with the Swiss player double fault on the second breakpoint.
